53: Potatolympic!

Image hosting by Photobucket
This week's Illustration Friday submission started as an exercise in futility. Take the saying one's eyes are bigger than one's stomach and twist it in an artistic sense and you get a situation I often fall into. In my case, my concept is occasionally bigger than my execution.

Because Kerry and I spent the majority of our weekend painting the kitchen ceiling and hiding (hopefully once and for all) the Great Pipe Leak of '06, I wasn't planning on entering a piece for the current I-F theme (chair). But I had an idea that would take the theme and tie it to the upcoming Winter Olympics, an event I always watch and love. I started doodling my idea of a couch potato in an armchair careening down a slalom course, in a tribute to the many others out there like me who tune in every four years. Attempts on Sunday and Monday to put it to paper though, didn't work out, and I decided to drop it. But today I came up with this compromise, a fast spoof on the universal and basic forms of Olympic design. The colour scheme is taken directly from the logo for the next Winter Games in Vancouver, which I'm determined to attend.

Love the olympic primary colours - nothing could be boring or uncomfortable from this chair!

What an excellent word-creation. Potatolympiad.... mmm, that could even get me, a non-sports-watching person, to couch up and watch. The perfect poster, really!

I know well the feeling of grand ideas and eventual compromise! It does get hard cranking these things out every week along with keeping a job and a home life afloat:> At any rate, I like this very much...the chair has that real recliner nightmare look in full color, and the event sounds splendid. I have a feeling the competition is going to be very steep, though...you better start practicing now! I love how you infuse your excellent design sense with humor...a winning combination for sure:>

No offence, but the concept seems mostly irrelevant to this excellent piece of art (but maybe that's just me). This is a really striking and eyecatching piece of art - I love the white outline and most of all the way you've distributed the colours (your eye runs across the red, green, blue, yellow) - really attention grabbing!

I love it!
Maybe you have created Homer Simpson's new lounge colour scheme?

AND possibly a new word?
Maybe he's watching the PotatoCast on his iPoTaTo? :)

Well done and very comfy looking. I think I could really love that chair. And I agree with Jonesy about this being a great poster. Good stuff indeed.

I suppose that most often concept is bigger than execution except for the rare cases of a genius sparcle.
But this execution is great. I am eager to show it, especially to my men ;)
