42: Mama Said Knock You Out

Not that this week's Illustration Friday theme (
blue) particularly speaks to me, but for some odd reason I find angry people a heckuvalot easier drawing subject than happy people – probably because it's just that much more conducive to line-work. So, the word 'blue' gave me the chance to show off this cranky woman I just finished today. The inspiration came mostly straight outta my head, with a few exceptions; the idea of giving her fat, inflated fists came from a fridge-magnet illustration I made a few years ago – and the white fringe around her figure is created from Photoshop brushes once again complements of Philadelphia designer Keith Bowman (these brushes were also deployed for my Illustration Friday envy submission in the summer).

The initial illustration handiwork was done in pencil and a few different pens (line-work through her hair, collar and pants was helped out with a ruler, too). It was then over to Photoshop to insert the background and fist fills, as well as the bits of text. Clicky here for a closer look, but watch out for them fists.

Awesome!! (Am I just getting really redundant??) Okay, I mean, I HATE IT! ;-) Her face is great.

It's funny you said you like drawing angry people. I was noticing yesterday that everytime I draw that little cartoon of myself, I'm never smiling. I wonder what that means!

What kind of pens do you use? The line is so fine. Do you draw with an extensive set of rapidographs?? I feel bad that she has huge fists. No wonder she is so angry.

A very good drawing!!! This has just confirmed there is a translation difference to the term 'Blue mood' or 'being blue'. I don't know if it is an international difference but it means 'sad' down under, not angry. Interesting. She is a great angry person though :)

Before you go laying any bets with your Aussie buddies as to the Canadian definition of "blue", I'll mention that your message is correct. Blue does mean sad in the New World, too. I'm taking it to the larger realm of feeling generally negative.

Anger would be 'seeing red', too. Maybe 'purple' would make the most sense, then?

; )

Thanks for the kind words, visitors!

My, she looks feisty! She has the face of a seasoned boxer, kinda smashed in with the wrinkles radiating from the center. Great sense of action, especially with those fists! I like the shade of blue you chose – not so cool as to cancel out the emotion she's expressing. Good one! And, thanks for your comment on my illo this week. I don't usually like to go through all the technical stuff because I take up so much space with my other commentary, but I think this week I will put up the "before" version of my drawing and explain how I got the "blue" version.

Your expressive line work is fantastic. I'd love to this illo done in red. I think it would really PACK A PUNCH in red!
